EAGLEBURGMANN WET TO DRY GAS SEAL UPGRADES

Plan for the future by identifying troubled compressors now

Don’t let oil seals affect process efficiencies or cause unnecessary shutdowns. Wet to dry gas seal upgrades prevent this but require substantial planning. This is vital because it is typically 24-30 months just to an upgrade execution point. Identifying troubled compressors now helps planning for your company's future needs.

HISTORY / BACKGROUND
Compressor seal technology has evolved a lot since the introduction of compressors, creating many types of compressor seals. There are traditional oil-lubricated seals with technology equivalent to liquid pump seals, iso-carbon seals, floating bushing seals or labyrinth seals. Each offers different sealing performance levels, but ultimately each of these designs allows oil into the compressor and / or produces substantial process gas leakage. Oil reduces process gas performance or purpose and causes constant cleaning of piping and cooling systems or even replacement. Refrigerant compressors are especially problematic because oil greatly reduces the cooling process efficiency.

EAGLEBURGMANN DRY GAS SEALS

Dry gas seals are the most common seals used today and EagleBurgmann Dry Gas Seals have evolved since the first EagleBurgmann installed reference over thirty (30) years ago.
Most compressors today are delivered with dry gas seals, because of:
  • Reliability
  • Eliminating oil leakage into the process
  • Producing minimal or even no process gas loss

Due to the dry gas seals evolution, there are many opportunities to improve performance by retrofitting existing dry gas seals or upgrading compressors with oil seals to dry gas seal technology for increasing compressor and process efficiencies.

COMPRESSOR UPGRADES FROM OIL SEALS

A typical challenge with an upgrade is fitting a dry gas seal into a seal oil cavity. Thinking outside the box and evolving dry gas seal technology now allow fewer ports to make the conversion. This minimizes compressor case modifications, to reduce the overall cost.

To make a successful upgrade, please consider these 4 important success factors:
  1. Anticipate changed compressor dynamics
  2. Identify seal fit and required modifications
  3. Ensure proper panel design and implementation
  4. Have adequate tooling available
